The gaming medium has greatly changed as the years have gone by. Shelves that were once flooded with games with originality, such as Ice Climber, Rayman, PaRappa The Rapper, Gitaroo Man, and even PONG are now flooded with games that have no emotion and flow that are just the same dried up ideas and violence, such as Call of Duty, God of War, and Grand Theft Auto (5 especially).
These new games have thrown old gems and new gems away and made them fall greatly into obscurity, so much so that people won’t even give these games a chance. While some of these games are still being made today, they usually sell poorly as nobody in today’s gaming world cares about anything except blood, shooting and money. That is a great disappointment, because games like PaRappa the Rapper and Gitaroo Man were seen as gems that won many an award back in the late 90s and early 2000s, and they are now games that people don’t know, yet if you look hard enough you can find them in a bargain bin at some store.
These older games deserve to go noticed as they are full of wonderful music and color and great ideas. Parappa is a rapping dog that is paper thin; the last time an idea like that came around was in 2001.
Now it’s just children and teens (heck, even adults) playing brown and gray shooting games, and it’s sad, because obscure games have a rare charm that brings wonder and amazement; almost everybody remembers the Nintendo 64 but nobody ever talks about the gems on it, they just say “Oh, I remember that, it didn’t have any shooters like Call of Duty.”
Right next to those shooters and violent adventures on the shelf, there are great and amazing platformers and music games, even puzzle games, like Rayman Legends, Super Mario Galaxy, Wonderful 101 and Sonic Lost World. These new games will fall into obscurity as well if they go un-noticed, these colorful, vibrant and amazing to play games deserve just as much a spot in your game collection as your Call of Duties and Battlefields. These games deserve some type of credit now and deserve to at least be tried out, otherwise gamers are missing the point in having fun with multiple experiences and the fun in being a “GAMER” overall. So dust off that Playstation 2 or Xbox or even Atari, and go find something that interests you from that era, you might just find a fantastic rare gem waiting for you.
