On Monday, April 8, MSN messenger accounts were converted to use Skype. The service was out for all around the world except for China. A website called “Outlook.com” now replaces what was MSN messenger.
Windows live messenger or MSN messenger, which had been in operation for 14 years, was bought by Skype for $8.5 billion in 2011. The transition took almost half a year because users were still willing to use their MSN messenger. Windows live messenger had as much as 300,000 users around the world everyday using it, but it had other new competitors like social networks such as “WhatsApp” and “Facebook” that replaced it.
“I enjoyed MSN messenger, because you could put in it your style; change your background, letters and a phrase you liked. I also like the faces and sounds it made [emoticons and status updates],” sophomore Montse Delgadillo said.
Messenger was very popular in the ‘90s and early 2000s when desktops were the most used, but now more people use smartphones and tablets.
“MSN messenger was my first social network and I liked it, because I could communicate with my friends and family from Mexico,” sophomore Odmara Hernandez said.
Skype currently has about 280 million active users and expect the number to increase from users migrating from MSN Messenger.
For many people MSN messenger was significant to their lives and had many memories with it. What memory did you have with MSN messenger? Are you going to transfer to Skype with user ID from MSN hotmail? Leave them in the comments below.
