The fish are coming this week. Maintaining sea life is now a one of the many applied science activities students can partake in. They not only have a chance to learn about aquatic science, but they get to choose from six varieties of different fish. Aquatic science teaches how to sustain aquatic life, and if the fish dies so does the grade.
“Right now I’m working with SAWS to get the approval of the fish and we’ll be using a propagation system to keep the fish cool because the fish need a certain temperature for them to survive,” Liesa Byler, the aquatic science teacher, and marine biologist said.
Final preparations are now in place as they prepare for the fish to arrive this week. She also has other ideas for how students can apply their knowledge.
“We’re hoping to do two field trips,” Byler said. “Going to the Aquatic Springs in San Marcos, Texas and Chorpus Christi to the boat Call to Katy.”
The core of the class derives from responsibility and caring. The students themselves are excited to learn in such a unique way.
“I think it’s amazing to be able to raise your own fish, this is such an amazing experience. Right now I’m just looking forward to what kind of fish I’m getting. ” Adrian Brinson, a Junior, said. “I think the teacher is very nice and kind, [and] she is doing so much for us.”
