Cartoon Network’s new animated series, Young Justice, is yet another saga in the ever-growing DC animated universe that’s turning heads in the comic book and action cartoon communities alike. This time, the focus is on the sidekicks, rather than the adult heroes.
This series, which is loosely based on the comic of the same name, centers around Robin, Superboy, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Miss Marian, and Artemis. Together, they form Young Justice, a team sent to carry out covert missions by the Justice League, which consists of the more experienced, adult superheroes. The League’s roster includes Superman, Batman, Green Arrow, Aquaman, The Flash, Martian Manhunter, Red Tornado, and Black Canary.
“It’s a good show for fans of the DC comics. A good show, but not just for kids,” William Brown, freshmen, said.
According to the show’s producers, Young Justice was formed because the Justice League had become celebrities, so a subgroup was needed to fight crime on the sly. The sidekicks are out to prove that they are capable of being full-fledged crimefighters, rather than mere “second-banana” heroes.
“I haven’t seen the show, but it looks like Teen Titans and Justice League put together,” Carlos Huff, junior, said.
The series is a major departure from the DC comic book of the same name. In the comic, the Justice League was busy in another dimension, so a slightly different line-up of sidekicks was forced to protect the world. Mirroring its late-Nineties origin, the comic was chock full of quirky pop-culture references, so the storyline has been updated for the new generation.
“The show’s gonna be more kid friendly than the comic I mean, in the first issue, thay fought a chick named Mighty with hypnotic powers,” Brondon Garcia, junior, said.
Since the series Teen Titans was ended in 2006, pretty much every superhero cartoon was centered around one or more adult heroes. So, whether you love action cartoons, comic books, or just like seeing teenagers take center stage, check out Young Justice, Fridays at 7 PM on Cartoon Network. Just remember: “Don’t call the sidekicks!!!”
