Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) encourages students to go into the medical field and experience medicine.
“We all work very hard to support each other,” said sponsor Deborah Ramirez. HOSA is now international and is a part of Italy and Mexico.

Five years ago HOSA started out with about 10 members now in 2015 there are 85 members.
“Last year was the highest amount of students to ever join HOSA which was 88 students,” Ramirez said. HOSA meets every thursday after school.
They’re six officers that keep HOSA organized; Yadira Terrazas president, Linh Phan Vice president, Branda Lee secretary, Reese Brinkley historian, Janet Moreno reporter, and Derik Murphy Historian.
“It’s really great way to get involved,”said Phan.
“Leadership is important,” added Lee.
Elections are held at the end of the year to determine officers for the next year.
HOSA is always doing fundraisers to help pay for expenses since the money is needed for transportation, and hotels when competition starts plus equipment for HOSA students. HOSA is trying to convince the district managers to set up a wheelchair race for a fundraiser idea.
Online competitions start Dec. 10, and regionals will happen in January in Austin.
“This is all very nerve wracking and stressful for the students that are participating,” Ramirez said.
