We all see these kids with dyed black hair and chains on their jeans.
At one point or another, walking the hallways of Roosevelt, you have probably bumped into a student with super tight skinny jeans and a wild band tee on.
Goth or Emo, whatever you want to call them, there has to be something tucked behind the dark eye liner and black clothing.
Emo is a stereotype for people who dress in dark clothing and wear dark, heavy make-up. They are typically thought to listen to screamo, a genre of music where a lot of noise is made with a scream. Screaming out one’s emotion in other words. An example is the band My Chemical Romance.
Students who qualify under most of these identifiers are tagged as emo.
A huge saying I’ve heard across the internet is “Go back to your corner and cry!” and “Why don’t you just kill yourselves already?” When people act like this towards people who are already so depressed, I know it can push them over the edge and they start to consider the suggestions.
Of course, not all kids who dress as that of someone who is emo is depressed or emotional. Some people like that style of clothing and fall into that character because they want to. They embrace a character and allow it to swallow them. It’s not always like that, though.
There are a few people who actually have extreme thoughts of leaving this world and the way they dress is a huge cry out of emotion.
Instead of making fun of them, we should smile and say a quick hello. If someone is depressed, we can all try to show them happier routes and not try to make things worse. It’s not right to witness the downfall of another student when we can step in and help.
I know that not all people who dress or act this way truly need it, but if we can find the ones who do, we can save a life.
