On the weekend of April 26, the track team had the chance to show off their skills at the region meet.
Runners Jesse Reyna, Jose Arredondo, Wilfred Porter and Andre Winston participated in the mile relay.
Reyna also competed in the 400 and 800 and was able to go to State on May 11, where he broke school records and earned seventh in the 400 and fourth place in the 800 competition.
“I was pretty excited about going to State, I wasn’t so sure about winning all the way but I knew I was going to place,” Reyna said. “It felt really good to be able to represent Roosevelt for my first time after three years of talking about it.”
Senior pole vaulter Steven Campbell, who broke school records earlier in the year, tied for second at region but then earned alternate position for state in the tiebreaker.
The girls had a regional presence as well. Sophomore Ayanna Atkins and senior Ekara Mitchell competed in shotput and discus and Kaniesha Moore competed in hurdles. Atkins finished as an alternate to state in shotput.
“It felt fantastic to be able to make it to finals,” Atkins said. “I made it last year but I didn’t really place, but I was pretty confident about my effort and about making it to State. I am a little upset I wasn’t able to make it to State this year but I always have next year to try harder.”
Over all everyone seemed to have a good year with track and Roosevelt is happy to recognize their athletes and their hard work and dedication.
