The Leadership-Experience-Opportunity or Leo club is now having a shoe drive to help the homeless. This is the first time they have done it, since a neighborhood church called John Calvin that is on Walzem contacted Leo Club sponsor Lisa Alanis. The shoe drive isn’t only for the Leo Club members, it’s for everyone; the club just collects them.

“It doesn’t benefit the Leo Club, it just gives a good feeling about serving the community,” said Alanis, who also teaches Spanish II pre-ap, Spanish I and AP language.
The drive has been announced on the morning announcements and the club has been putting posters all around the school. The people who will give the shoe won’t get community service hours, since it’s a donation.
Students can donate shoes to Saber 316. The shoe drive ends on Thursday April 25, when they will deliver the shoes to the John Calvin church.
Leo Club has had several fundraisers and donation drives this year. Last winter nine NEISD families lost their homes in Wood Hollow apartment complex and the Leo Club gave each family $50 of Wal-Mart gift cards. Last month’s event raised $200 and they bought socks downtown.
“I like being in the Leo Club, because we always help the service and try to help the community,” sophomore Mariana Wong said. “It’s a good program to help others when they’re in need.”
