University Interscholastic League is a chance to compete against many schools in what you’re good at, whether it’s academic or athletic. D.A.T.A. Director Mrs. Stacia Fitzsimon has been building a UIL team for Roosevelt High School all school year and they competed in their first combined event at MacArthur High School on Jan. 21.
What is UIL mainly about and what does it have to offer?
“UIL contributes to many competitions with different schools and really helps students with opportunities to improve with practice or win medals,” Mrs. Stacia Fitzsimon, said.
Being a part of the UIL team can also help with scholarships and good resumes for college.
“I really do enjoy being in UIL, especially for our competitions, you make new friends and go to compete at you’re good at. It’s a very nice experience.” Alejandra Lira, junior, said.
Lira seems to enjoy UIL very much, a feeling shared by junior Jasmine Brown.
“It’s a great program to be in if you like to compete, it helps with college resumes and maybe even scholarships, I really like it. If there is no scholarship for me, it’s the fun and the experience that matters,” Brown said.
According to most of the participants, UIL is an amazing experience and a great way to have fun with what you love and get an opportunity to a college scholarship all in one. Students across NEISD will compete in the UIL District Meet in March. For more information on future UIL participation, students can see Mrs. Fitzsimon the DATA director, in her office.
