The volleyball teams have been practicing before school started and every day after school for weeks now. They have been playing games two times a week. Even though its hard work, the players say they still get enjoyment out of the game. The freshmen team is half way through their season while still getting a chance to know each other.
“The freshman team are hard working and well mannered girls” varsity volleyball coach Lori Ybarra said.
Nineteen out of 41 players are freshmen, and there have been 11 games so far with about that many more to come for the team.
For some students there is a rivalry between Roosevelt and Madison because students from Wood Middle School split and attend both high schools. They got to reunite at their Tuesday game.
“I am excited to show how awesome Roosevelt is and that my friends from Wood should have came here,” Freshmen Volleyball player Jacqueline Dominguez said.
Many girls face this same dilemma because they play against girls they grew up with, but they do find ways to bond with their current teammates.
“After every game the players stand up on the seats of the bus, shouting the Roosevelt chant and banging the bus walls,” Dominguez said.
The team lost the Madison game but the players still had fun during the game.
“Volleyball is competitive but fun” freshmen volleyball player Nora Rendon said.
Rendon is very experienced player she has been playing the game now for four years and plans on continuing playing through out her high school career.
The next game for the players is on Sept. 26, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. against Churchill high school.
