On Nov. 30, the DATA freshmen and the majority of their teachers went on a fieldtrip to the McNay Art Museum and the IMAX theatre.
“I thought the fieldtrip was spectacular. The whole idea was beautiful,” Ms. Wright Dagget, DATA art teacher, said.
While at the McNay museum, the students experienced all different types of art work and sculptures that have been created. The artwork and sculptures the McNay has on display assist people in viewing cultures from different parts of the world. The McNay’s art pieces have such strong artistic merit that many people travel thousands of miles to view it themselves. In person is the only way to view the art pieces on display at the McNay because cameras are not allowed inside.
“My favorite piece of art was ‘The Portrait of Hans Frisch’ by Earnest Ludwig Kirchner. It was great to see,” Dagget said.
There are artworks from various famous artists and sculptors, such as, Picasso, Monet, and Rodin. Not only does the McNay contain many prized paintings and illustrations, the building itself is considered to be one of the most interesting and unique structures in San Antonio, as it is a piece of art in itself. On the outer grounds of the building there are large mobile sculptures, that move with the wind and by weighted appendages.
“I thought the grounds, even inside, was simply beautiful. Everything was just gorgeous,” Dagget said.
Once they arrived at the IMAX theatre, the DATA students viewed the movie “Hubble 3D,” which is about the Hubble telescope in outterspace created by Edwin Powell Hubble. The narrarator of this film is Leonardo DiCaprio, greatly known for one of his lead roles in The Titanic.
“The movie was remarkable! I went home and downloaded pictures from the actual Hubble space telescope from the internet and it really blew me away. It was really neat,” Dagget said.
Showing interest in things like the art pieces at the McNay, and then learning about the Hubble telescope highlights the hopes and future aspirations of the DATA students.
