On Nov. 5 the buses were starting up bright and early as DATA took its annual trip to the San Antonio Museum of Arts (SAMA).
This field trip was also about taking a educational stroll through the San Antonio River Walk. This gave students an opportunity to see the engineering and architectural view of the San Antonio River.
Students had the chance to view the various Latin American, Roman, and Asian exhibits and the moving exhibit, “To Live Forever,” which is all about Egyptian life. Even though the artifacts were surrounded by glass, that didn’t stop students from taking a closer look at the different time periods of our world. Students had to do specific assignments such as sketching what they saw, and answering questions about the different artifacts.
Students were able to experience the different aspects of the museum and the River Walk which, gave them a better understanding of what life has been as it was built around us.
“Students walked through the river and they looked through the new lock system. [They] looked at the canal’s engineering and architectural [aspects] with the artifacts in the library, the World History, and English behind it,” Stacia FitzSimon, DATA Director, said.
Students saw a bundle of artwork and the different types that there were. Students were also able to compare and contrast the differences from all the cultures, and how people saw the world around themselves.
“They learned about the Riverwalk and the history, and that we have this wonderful museum, and that they want to go back on their own to go through the museum,” Susan Casper, said.
This was an experience that students got to go out and participate first hand, by walking through the different exhibits and seeing the artifacts and reading the plaques and knowing more detail about each piece of work.
“This is a connection between class, and the real world to what they saw applies to their learning; these are concrete real world examples,” FitzSimon, said.
This day was all about learning and bringing the traditional class textbook experience to life.
