After many years of dedication towards raising awareness for crime prevention, the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), creator of the National Night Out program, has reached its 30th anniversary, and Roosevelt will be hosting an event in its courtyard on Oct. 1 from 6 – 8 p.m. to bring the community together.
“Since we’re the high school we’re like the hub of the community we want to bring together neighbors, family, friends, students, teachers, and the district,” family specialist and National Night Out coordinator Chris Cadena said.
Roosevelt has participated in National Night Out (NNO) since 2008, and an estimated total of 1,700 people come out each year. In the 2012 event Roosevelt placed first in the schools and business category, they are now aiming to be first overall in the city of San Antonio.
“It was fun, there was a lot of people there, it was really lively,” Senior Ivanna Ontiveros said of her experience last year.
The event will be co-hosted by the school’s neighbor, Rackspace.
“Our part as a sponsor is to help provide a community atmosphere through collaboration, culture, and FOOD! We are sponsoring the dinner, conducting a huge art project, painting faces, and participating with the table set up to talk about Rackspace and the open cloud academy. We love having the opportunity to partner with Roosevelt and our neighborhood,” Community Affairs Specialist Allie Howard said via e-mail.
Alongside Rackspace some of our very own will have booths set up with games and prizes such as the Science dept., HOSA, Robotics, DATA, ETA, the Art dept., and many more. Performances by the dance teams including the cheerleaders, dazzlers, and the patriots will be featured, as well as some by the San Juan Guard and the Riderettes the drill teams from the JROTC program.
Joining the eventful night will also be Oc Taekwondo black belt school and the Image Dance Company.
This event is free and open to the public.
