Beginning in 1996, the Academy Of American Poets chose April to be National Poetry month. They claimed it to be the largest literary program in the world, reaching 10 million American people with programs such as ‘Poem in Your Pocket Day’ which is this Thursday and the ‘Dear Poet Project.’
Poem in Your Pocket Day is a day where everyone has a poem that means something to them or one of their very own in their pocket. If a teacher or an administrator stops you and asks for your poem, and you show them your poem, you will be entered in a contest to win a prize.
“It’s a time to celebrate poetry’s importance to Americas culture,” librarian Cynthia Saenz said.
She also recommended poetry such as “Poetry for young people” by Langston Hughes, Poetry by Maya Angelou, and “Broken Pieces” by Rachel Thompson. There is also a book display in our library hall filled with poetry books; if you are interested in checking out some of these books see Mrs. Saenz in the library.
