Public performances begin today for the One Act Play The Lark, which placed third (out of the seven district schools) and took the alternate selection at One Act Play District Contest on March 27 at Johnson High School. Junior Oriana Baltas, senior Taj Allen and sophomore Darcell Bios were all given individual medals for their dedication and hard work during their reenactment of The Lark.
Baltas was given the All-Star Cast Award for her Joan of Arc character in the play.
“Because it was my first competition it was exciting, I did not expect to do as good as I did,” Baltas said. “I was assigned the Joan of Arc part , and I felt like we did everything we could do. It felt good to know we gave it all we had and now that we will perform for Roosevelt, the pressure will be off.”
Tech students as well were excited to win awards.
“It was very exciting to receive my Honor Tech Award, I was surprised,” Allen said. “I didn’t expect to get an individual award, especially because it’s barely my second time competing in UIL. I don’t do just tech stuff for theatre, I act too. I enjoy acting better but I was assigned for tech, but considering we beat the two schools who beat us last year it felt great to sacrifice a little.”
It was also Bios’ second year competing in the UIL competition and he was proud to have won an Honorable Mention All-Star Cast Award for all three characters he had to play.
“It feels good to have won an individual medal; I didn’t expect to win anything,” Bios said. “I feel that if I was eager to win something and at the end we came home with nothing I was going to be disappointed so I was hoping for nothing and at the end the surprise made it that more exciting. Last year, the school got the alternate award so basically we were a backup in case a school couldn’t make it, but this year it feels good to actually have placed and be in the competition regardless considering we beat the four schools that beat us last year.”
The Lark will premiere at Roosevelt HS today April 4 through Saturday April 6 at 7 pm, Administration and Staff will be Free, General Admission will be $7, and Students will be $5 with an ID.
