Theater will do a play based on the book “James And The Giant Peach.” It is an annual tradition for theatre to perform for elementary schools to teach them how high school theater is and this year they are going to visit Windcrest elementary school. Everyone in theater can participate, and even anyone at school, because everybody is invited to participate in this children’s play. The auditions were Feb. 19 and 20 at the black box. Students don’t have to pay to participate. Theater is aiming to have this play in April.
“I’ve done a children’s play before,” senior Alenzia McKinney said. “Last year I participated in ‘The trial of the big bad wolf’ and it was great, but last year I didn’t have the chance to participate in ‘Hansel and Gretel,’ I think this year’s play is going to be great.”
The play needs participants with enthusiasm since they are going to perform for children. The book “James and the Giant Peach” was written in 1961 and later in 1996 came a movie for it with the same name.
“I’m happy that we get to perform for the children, because it might cause them to be excited for theater at an early age,” Sean Bruce, sophomore, said.
Bruce and McKinney both participated in the auditions on Feb. 20. The results were posted the day after auditions. The students that will be in the play will have to show up every week to practice.
“James and the Giant Peach” is number 56 on the top 100 challenge books to read, according to The American Library Association. There will be a time were the play can be seen by family and friends before they do it at Windcrest Elementary.
“I’m glad I got into the play, I’m a ladybug, I think it’s going to be fun, I’m glad I’m going to visit the Elementary school I went to,” Shannon Tapia, a sophomore, said.
