Since the age of five, she has been bowling with her grandfather. And now, after 12 years, she is making her way to Regionals to represent her high school.
ETA junior Abby Plexico will be walking through the doors of Bandera Bowling Center on March 3, for bowling Regionals.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, Plexico practices at the Astro Bowling Center with her team. On Saturdays at the Brunswick Bowling Center, she’ll practice with her grandfather and family friend, for league. While practicing there, Plexico also receives scholarship money.
“This’ll be my third year with the club, but I’ve been around bowling since I was a day old,” Plexico said. “It’s a family sport, so it’s in my blood, I guess.”
Plexico’s grandfather, Earl Cook, has been involved in bowling for 45 years, starting at the age of 22 because his wife was an avid bowler when they met. Their granddaughter now, carries on this tradition.
“She is carrying on the family legacy of good bowling. She has no fear of playing any target on the lanes,” Cook said.
With so much experience in bowling, Plexico has developed her own special technique for whenever she bowls.
“Focus, focus, focus,” Plexico said. “If your mental capacity isn’t good, then your bowling isn’t good.”
Come Regionals, there will be two North East schools, one North Side school and the Corpus Christi district will be attending. When the bowling match is over, eight competitors will leave Bandera Bowling Center and will be eligible for State bowling.
