It is the time of year when student artists really begin competing in competitions. Last weekend, 59 students attended VASE competition, with 51 students earning medals, including junior Darlene Mercado who is going to state in April for her animal totem of a peacock.
“It was fun, and I met a lot of new faces,” Mercado said.
Last month, seniors Tyler Bantz, Gerardo Gomez, and Frances Mesko were all awarded scholarships to the Western Art Academy.
“The thing I am looking forward to the most is oil painting,” Gomez said.
At the January PTA meeting, 22 students were given awards in a public ceremony for their participation in The Magic of a Moment Reflections Art Contest.
The following students won awards of Excellence and advanced to District Competition: Emarald Robinson (in photography); Kayla Israel-Summers, Khiana Hamilton, Rodney Lake, Khalid Mitchell, Zasha Oliveira, Pedro Pimentel, Eboni Price, Shay Strickland, Rick Zamarripan (in visual arts).
“[I was inspired by] the look and expression people react when they see loved ones come home all surprised,” Israel-Summers said.
The following students won Reflections Awards of Merit: Victoria Ludolph and Elizabeth Salinas (in photography); Davona Cochran, Jasmine Espinoza, Jennifer Rivera, Christian Sifuentes, Carlos Villa (in visual arts).
