The presidential election, one of the most important events in American history when two men try to become commander in chief of the United States took place Nov. 6. It was either going to be a new face (Romney) in the white house or continue with the incumbent (Obama).
There were tons of mock elections at public schools all over San Antonio and the North East School District, including here at Roosevelt High School, had a mock election. More than 31,000 students participated district-wide, including 464 students at Roosevelt.
Teachers believed it is good for the students to take part in a mock election.
“I believe this mock election is good for the students. It’s a dress rehearsal for real life and how it will be when they are adults and actually vote themselves,” Coach Corey Bedell said.
Faculty were glad to see students take the mock election seriously, because as students they are the future of America.
People who voted for the real election, had some main issues they wanted each candidate to emphasize on. That one thing was education: education was a word heard frequently from students, teachers, and everyone for the most part.
”Education is the key to success. It’s a foundation of the future,” Coach Bedell said.
Along with that, Americans focused on the attitude of the presidential candidates, and the way they answered questions. “The character of the candidates, the way they spoke played a role on who I voted for,” government teacher Mr. Morsey said.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and students at Roosevelt did just that, though some students feel that no matter who’s president they won’t make a difference for this country. Some feel the country won’t change within four years because of a president, rather, they say it will take decades to change America.
Senior Israel Verastegui said that he feels America can’t change just on one president, its going to have to be America to change America.
The election to many it is very important, but to others it’s nothing big. But they can all agree they just want what’s best for America. The election was one of the most talked about elections now that we have social media Twitter, Facebook, and other social media.
