The companies, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta of JROTC had a ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 8, from 5:30 to 6 p.m. to celebrate Veteran’s Day, which was on Sunday, Nov. 11.
The history of Veteran’s Day goes all the way back to 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day, “a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace,” for the eleventh day of November. It came to be officially “Veteran’s” Day on June 1, 1954, by the Congress amending the act of WWII veteran Raymond Weeks who had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all black veterans, not just those who died in WWI. After his death, he became the “Father of Veteran’s Day.”
“I felt very proud of our cadets and very glad that COL. Don Miles came out to speak,” senior Samantha Lea said.
All four companies came out, represented themselves, the flags were brought out and veterans were recognized and honored, as well all veterans who have served. Before the ceremony ended, Ser. Brown fired the cannon, as a salute to past American forces.
