With Halloween coming up, the Teen Read Week theme was “DARE to read for the fun of it.” Teen Read Week was Oct. 14-20, sponsored by The American Library Association (ALA) with events occurring all week.
“We stress the importance that every student should have a library card,” Cynthia Saenz, the librarian, said.
Teen Read Week is trying to promote “Young Adult literature.”
“The problem is that kids think they can’t find something that interest them,” Kathy Shaub, a senior English teacher, said.”They think it’s like the books we read in English.”
To get students interested, the Library had “fine forgiveness” where school library fines were forgiven when students brought in their books. Twenty-five students took part of this.
They also had a drawing for a flash drive that students could enter by checking out books.
“I participated by getting a ticket,” Thomas Bakaysa, a freshman who checks out a book a week, said.
Though Bakaysa didn’t win, his sister did. Freshman Samantha Bakaysa won a flash drive, along with sophomore Ramiro Benavidez, senior Alexandra Rodriguez, senior Chloe Brown, and freshman Marshawn Loftin.
