In week two in the football season, following a lopsided game against Stevens in week one, the Rough Riders faced a tough challenge. John Jay has one of top receivers in San Antonio, so Roosevelt’s defense had to bring their A game.
Roosevelt had a tough first half with six penalties for a total of 55 yards. John Jay had a commanding 21 to 7 two minutes left in the second half, but Roosevelt scored a big game-changing touchdown with six seconds left of the second quarter. At that point Roosevelt stopped John Jay’s momentum, with the score at halftime being 21 to 14.
“I was mad I couldn’t be out there with my brothers on the field because of my broken finger,” senior Kelvin Taylor said. “I couldn’t be put there fighting and battling helping my team out.”
To start the second half, Roosevelt running back Frank Barnes scored his second touchdown of the game and first touchdown of the second half. The game at that point was all tied up; it was back and forth up until the fourth quarter when Arrion Springs picked up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown.
“[The] momentum was changing. We did everything right on defense and offensive end,” Coach Anthony Boykin said.
Roosevelt faced a14 point deficit, changed it to a 14 point lead and with 3 minutes left in the game, Rodderick Owens put the game away with a touchdown to give Roosevelt the two touchdown lead. The game was not put away, though. John Jay had an answer and scored quickly and Roosevelt had only a one touchdown lead. John Jay attempted an onside kick but Roosevelt recovered.
Game number 2 is history and Velt goes 2-0. They will try to remain undefeated as they face the Canyon team this Saturday at Heroes stadium.
