February is a time to celebrate African-Americans, who made a difference in history. Society thanks these individuals for contributing to the freedoms people of all walks of life share today with Black History month.
Several Rough Riders shared their thoughts on African-Americans that deserve recognition this month.
“I think that Martin Luther King Jr. is someone who should for sure, most definitely, be remembered forever. King should especially be remembered during Black History Month. He led the Civil Rights Movement with his speech ‘I Have A Dream’ which made a big difference in history,” Raymond Rangel, senior, said.
Rangel believes King’s speech made a big difference in the lives of people today, while junior Krystelle Escamilla thinks music is life.
“I think that Ray Charles should be remembered and idolized for sure during Black History Month. That man knew music and created a new kind of music that we still listen to today,” Escamilla said.
Many Rough Riders agree that speech and music played a huge part in history, some other students think our current President of the United States should be remembered forever.
“I think that President Barack Obama most definitely should be remembered on Black History Month for his accomplishments in being the first black president in history and really trying to make a difference for the people,” Lissette Trujillo, sophomore, said.
A lot of people have an individual that they believe symbolizes Black History Month and think that person should be remembered forever. Most would agree that any African-American individual that changed history in some positive way deserves praise this month.
