As a new school year begins at Roosevelt High School, administrators and teachers have taken it amongst themselves to make the school better with new facilities and school rules.
As a Rough Rider there are many new rules enforced to “the house”, six minute passing periods for example, along with the tardy sweep. There are also new lunch facilities, such as the “salad bar” that provides free water and/or salad of your choice.
“I think the salad bar is a nice idea because, me as a vegetarian, I can’t eat the (other regular) cafeteria food,” Karina Hernandez, junior, said.
Furthermore, Rodriguez seems to agree with Hernandez on the new facilities, but is concerned with some of the changes.
“The ‘salad bar’ is good; I like it. I wish I had one more minute or so to get to class, especially from Saber Hall third floor to Rough Rider third floor,” Belinda Rodriguez, sophomore, said.
Teachers have been understanding of the long walk some students make from class to class and as long as students are legitamitly trying to make it from one class to the next, they are not being punished in any way. However, teachers have made it clear that students who choose to socialize between periods for long stretches of time will have to face penalties for their choices.
On the other hand, Oscar Gonzalez made some observations about the staircase and doors he goes through daily.
“I think they need to do something about those Saber doors. They’re too small. We don’t all fit through them and one by one takes forever, and Rough Rider up and down stairs by the gym are too crowded.” Oscar Gonzalez, junior, said.
Despite the frustrations of a few, it is unlikely that any widening of doors will happen in the near future and if students walk through them patiently then the flow of traffic will be successful. The increased monitoring of traffic by teachers and the new “Start On Time” initiative has helped students move along quicker however.
Well, by the looks of it the new school year at Roosevelt began with some noticible changes. The students are adjusting and with the help of the staff, this year will turn out just fine.
