William H. McRaven, a member of the Roosevelt High School graduating Class of 1973, helped lead the United States Navy SEALS to end the life and threat of one of the most notorious terrorists in modern times, Osama bin Laden.
McRaven helped organize the efforts to raid bin Laden’s compound on the outskirts of Islamabad, Pakistan. The raid was executed with the usage of top-secret Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopters.
McRaven was a history major at the University of Texas at Austin before joining the military. During his time at Roosevelt, he was a member of the EcologyClub, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Chess Club.
He currently serves as chief of the United States Special Operations Command. His military accomplishments include receiving the Bronze Star and Defense Superior Service Medal.
The news of bin Laden’s death was announced by President Barrack Obama the night of May 1. According to the Neilson Ratings for television viewing, 56.5 million people watched the historic announcement.
