Some high school students give attitude to adults just to get their own way and make themselves look cool in front of their peers. However, it’s not cool to give adults attitude and can ultimately effect these students in bad ways.
Freshman Christopher Munoz has witnessed first-hand the verbal abuse that some students direct towards teachers, parents, and mentors.
“Students (disrespect adults) just to look cool in front of other people, but sometimes it’s for a reason. It’s disrespectful to treat your elders that way,” Munoz said.
Students sometimes do it to see what kind of reaction the adult will give and sometimes that reaction is anger.
Senior Travis Rodriquez confirmed that students disrespect those trying to help them in order to get a laugh and to get them upset. Rodriquez claims that he does it in reaction to what actions or words are directed towards him first.
“Sometimes, I do give them (adults) attitude because they upset me first,” Rodriguez said.
Students might give teachers attitudes for different reasons. Sometimes it has to do with factors outside of the classroom that the student is not willing to share because these issues upset them too much. They vent their anger or frustration towards other people instead of finding positive ways to channel their energy and thoughts. It’s not fair for teachers to be yelled at, especially since they are taking their time to ensure students get a good education and the help they need.
Freshman Teresa Rivera summed up the thoughts of many students when they see other teens giving older people an attitude.
“They just want to look beast (cool) in front of their students,” Rivera said.
Rivera mentioned that she only gives attitude when negativity is shown towards her first. It’s not cool to yell at others regardless of age. It’s not fair to treat adults badly, when most of them do things to try and make younger people happy and treating them like trash and disrespecting them is wrong.
