Destiny White and Kevin Garcia will be making their way to Houston in April to showcase their artistic skill after receiving area medals at the Visual Art Scholastic Event Competition.
White, who competed in Division One is a member of Ms. Slena Hinojosa’s art class, while Garcia is currently under the guidance of Ms. Kendra Slaughter. These students were joined by 61 Roosevelt participants that received Region IV VASE medals. Due to confidentiality requirements of NEISD, a majority of the student winners’ names are not allowed to be published on the internet.
The regional competition consisted of seven districts and 26 schools along with 62 art teachers. There were 1,328 art pieces juried, and 89 artwork pieces featured at the regional competition will appear at the state competition to be held at Houston Clear Falls High School on April 8-9.
Roosevelt art teachers Ms. Janie Smith along with Ms. Susan Ferris also advised multiple medalists in several competitions. When interviewed about their students’ performances at the regional event, all four Roosevelt art teachers said that they were “extremely proud of their dedicated students.”
The fine arts hallway of the Arts and Science Building at Roosevelt displays some of the many creations these students have worked on.
