It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s “Superman and Lois!” Another story of the most classic, and possibly the most well known superhero, is being told through the TV screen. Superman and his wife Lois Lane are together once again, each living with their reporter jobs at the Daily Planet which can get kind of hectic. They show that living a double life is not easy.
On top of all the responsibilities that Superman and Lois have, they have to raise two teenage sons of their own. With all the powers that Superman has, not one of them can help him be the father that he needs to be for the boys, or can they?
“Superman and Lois” debuted on Feb. 23, 2021 on the CW channel. The show is part of what everyone calls the “Arrowverse.” This is because other shows like “Arrow,” “Supergirl,” “Batwoman,” and “The Flash” share the same universe within their own shows. This new Superman show, however, is a lot different than the average fan would think.
With a bigger budget for the show, it brings a whole different feel from the other CW shows that we have all seen. The way it’s filmed and written feels a lot more cinematic. Each episode is its own mini movie, each being an hour long at the most. There is talk that this is what the rest of the Arrowverse needs, and I think that is right. Things look like they are headed in the right direction.
The cast of the show consists of Tyler Hoechlin (Can You Keep A Secret?) as “Superman/ Clark Kent,”Elizabeth “Bitsie” Tulloch (Chronic) as “Lois Lane,” Jordan Elssas (Little Fires Everywhere) plays “Jon Kent” one of the sons, Alexander Garfin (The Peanuts Movie) as “Jordan Kent” the other son, Emmanuelle Chriqui (Hospitality) portrays “Lana Lang,” Wole Parks (Premium Rush) as “Captain Luthor,” and Adam Rayner (The Saint) as the corrupted businessman “Morgan Edge” with some other supporting cast members.
Superman and Lois have been together for while now. This time they have two sons who are in high school and need all the help they can get from their parents. Clark is struggling with balance in his life, as he takes on the world’s problems as Superman, and tries to be the best husband and father that he can be. The boys are wondering why their dad is not around all the time, along with their mother Lois working long hours at the Daily Planet. The city of Metropolis is really busy and a family has to stay on top of things in order to make it there. Despite the boy’s lives always having been in Metropolis, Clark decides that it’s best that he moves his family back to Smallville, a small town in Kansas where he grew up. Although Smallville is a very family friendly place to be, it brings its share of challenges as well.
All of this brings a whole different twist to the Superman character that is widely known. No one really thinks about his family life at home as he grows more with his wife Lois. With all the changes that have been made, I still consider this show to be a love letter to all of the Superman fans out there. Lee Toland Krieger, the director, has made sure he honors the Superman stories that have come before. TV-14 is the appropriate rating because of the more grown up themes within. For those who want to wish to watch, the show streams every Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Central Time on the CW. The sixth episode is said to be released sometime in May with the previous five already released.
