The audience leaned back into their seats in the darkened auditorium as they set their gaze to the performance drawn before them. A story of immense conflict between two rival gangs of different economic backgrounds. The play adaptation compelled the audience with emotional dialogues, violent fights, and devastating conclusions. The Roosevelt Theatre Company’s play adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders ran on Oct. 24, 25, and 26 as the first production of the 2019-2020 school year.
“I was able to picture the production how I was able to picture the book and the movie,” actress Heaven Covarrubias, who played Marsha, said. “It was that close of a representation.”
Auditions for The Outsiders began the first three weeks of school and practice commenced from September to October with an estimated 30 cast members.
“It was nice seeing the hardwork and effort of the cast,” audience member Felix Cruz said. “I really enjoyed the part where the greasers went up against the wealthy people in the final battle… the socs they’re called.”
Covarrubias enjoyed the production because she was able to learn from upperclassmen cast members who had experience in performing and create relationships with them, she said.
“Preparing I used the techniques from Mr. Thompson and Mr. Jackson,” Covarrubias said. “It was breathing in your character and exhaling yourself . It took over time, the conflict and relationships with the others, took weeks of practice getting to know other people.”
The theatre company is planning auditions in November for the upcoming romantic comedy musical She Loves Me.
“ I prefer light hearted plays compared to intense ones,” audience member Sa’Rye Wratcher who plans to audition for the musical said. “It [The Outsiders] was pretty good, but it wasn’t my favorite play compared to the well executed Hairspray.”
