The blindfold was finally raised for the fans of the Rough Riders on Friday May 17 at 5:30 at Roosevelt high school football field.
Although the 2019 Roosevelt Rough Riders football season doesn’t start for another four months, fans got a glimpse of the team that is getting talked about all over the district during the spring Navy v. White game on Friday.
“I think the most exciting thing about this year’s spring game is the fact that we get to see how we as a team have grown from August to now,” Navy Coach Darnell Barnes said.
It was a significant moment for the Riders, who ended the season this year 3-4 in district (4-6 overall), only a game away from ending the playoff drought at Roosevelt this year.
“I feel like not only that game but this spring game and the whole spring season is going to get us to where we want to be,” junior Darian Cleveland said.
For basically half of the Riders team, this was their last spring game.
“It’s not only our last spring but it’s our last season so we better make it count,” junior Jalen Smothers said.
For the first half of play, it was going back and forth, but after half time, the White team’s defense started to shut down the Navy team’s offense and the White team’s offense started to just pull away. The final score of the game was 19-14 with the White team coming on top with the victory.
“It was a good game and both teams played their tails off so I guess you could say hats off to both squads,” Coach John Garcia said.
