Roosevelt High School in cooperation with the American Diabetes Association will be hosting a Diabetes awareness event entitled “Achieving Balance” on Feb. 24. This event is free to the general public with educational sessions being led by Diabetes educators, Northeast Independent School District Physical Education teachers, and physicians.
Diabetes is a growing problem in our community and events such as this one hope to put an end to that disturbing trend with proper education of the risks associated with the life-altering condition.
Four adult sessions, which will be 20 minutes each, will start at 6 p.m. and run every 25 minutes. Issues covered during the sessions will include general awareness, detection, prevention, and management of diabetes.
There will be information on hand concerning healthy eating tips, school nutrition analysis, and food portion controls.
Student sessions will also begin promptly at 6 p.m. Elementary students will get to participate in six hands-on fun stations. There will also be activities for students in grades six through 12. Dinner will be served for the public from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
This event is also sponsored in part by NEISD nurses, HEB, and the San Antonio Food Bank. There will be toddler childcare available for parents attending sessions.
For more information, call the NEISD Department of Environmental Health at (210) 657-8623.
