Art runs deep in these women: Susan Ferris, S’Lena Hinojosa, Annabell Horton, Ruth Hui and Kendra Slaughter: all care more about who their students are versus what they create.
This is evident through the contests throughout the year, the AP Portfolios, and the group of students who got to attend National Portfolio Day in Austin on Sept. 30.
Susan Ferris, Kendra Slaughter, & S’lena Hinojosa attended National Portfolio Day with their students in Austin.
“It’s important to hear what others have to say about your art,” Ferris said.
Students were able to promote their art work to as many as 50 college reps that were in attendance. They had a number of talented students that represented Roosevelt proudly, while standing in long lines to meet college reps. One perk of the waiting is those who were later in line were able to see what they could do differently in their presentation.
“I love the opportunity to display my art to these colleges who may show interest in me and my classmates,” senior Jaina Wong said. “It can even benefit those who do not want to attend an art college [as it] can expand their horizons.”
Students in the art program also enter many competitions throughout the year, including Fire Safety, PTSA Reflections, VIA, Western Art, Battle of Flowers, and more.
