By Naomi Gutierrez| Each year art students compete in the Fire Prevention Week art contest. The theme this year was “Replace fire alarms every ten years!” Awards were announced on Oct. 22 at the Health and Safety Fair at the Public Safety Headquarters downtown. There were over 800 entries overall and Roosevelt won all the top places.

“Honestly I was really surprised” said junior Kiana Williams, who came in first place in the Fire Prevention Week contest. Williams drew Smokey the Bear giving information on smoke alarms.
Junior Sarah Torres won second place in the high school division but was the top winner overall.
“I was really excited about it, that they actually choose my art work, and I feel proud of myself. It was a very big accomplishment for me,” Torres said. Torres drew Sparky with a smoke alarm going off, giving the message to change smoke alarms every ten years.
Junior Daira Macias Navarro won third place in the high school division.
