Ten years after its founding, YouTube has grown big and more and more people aspire to become a YouTube Personality or have it as a hobby, to make vlogs, cover music, review games or just be an inspiration to others.
“I actually aspire to be a YouTuber and I was inspired by a lot of gaming YouTubers,” senior, Kevin Venegas said. “When I collaborate, it’s with people that have small YouTube channels, because you can get to know each other and give tips and help each other out. What’s cool is that you get to make videos on things that you like doing. For instance, playing video games. At times, my brothers come to watch me play. With YouTube I can have hundreds of people watching me play online and I get to play with fans and the best part of being a YouTuber is that I can be an inspiration to others.”
Founded by three former PayPal employees, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim in San Mateo, CA on Feb. 14, 2005, YouTube was later bought by Google on Nov. 13, 2006 .YouTube is one of the world’s leading social media sites, which according to dreamgrow.com, has about one trillion monthly visitors.
“Drew Morsen, is my favorite YouTuber, said he started making YouTube videos, because he was lonely and a lot of people think it’s funny, which may be true, but I really had nothing better to do and I was like what else can I do than to start making videos of myself,” junior, Karylin Herrera said. “Another YouTuber I like is Jenna Marbles, who is my icon and I strive to be like her. But not many people know my YouTube channel. My most popular video has over 1,000 views and that’s me signing a song in ASL (American Sign Language).”
YouTube can also be a way to connect to people, but for freshman, Chad Juniper, it’s a way to talk about things like review games, movies, comics, and play video games.
“My friend had a YouTube channel and he posted videos of himself playing Minecraft videos, which was in seventh grade. I never posted anything like that, but I thought it was cool and I mostly made my YouTube channel to be open about my opinions about random things. My favorite YouTuber is FilthyFrank, what I like about him is that he makes sketches and he is unique in his own way, which kind of inspired me to do videos.”
