Thirty percent of Americans have myopia or near-sightedness and sixty percent have hyperopia or far-sightedness. According to Vision Council of America, approximately 75 percent of adults in the United States wear some sort of vision correction and about 65 percent wear glasses and eleven percent wear contact lenses.
Trying to decide whether glasses or contacts are better, well, it’s an obvious answer. Glasses are the better option to choose and there are many reasons why, but there are three most important reasons.
First, glasses are safer. Don’t worry about getting those eye infections, when glasses could be used, which require little cleaning and actually helps protect the eyes from dust, dirt, debris, pollen and weather conditions like wind.
Second, glasses are cheaper. If there is no need to replace glasses, allaboutvision.com, senior editor, Gary Heiting, states, “Disposable contacts cost $220 to $260 for a year’s supply of lenses and $150 to $200 on contact lens solutions, for an annual cost of $370 to $460 to wear contact lenses, which compared to glasses, cost less than $300.”
Lastly, glasses are comfortable. Most people don’t have the exact comfort zone to put contacts in their eyes and worry about poking it. Well, glasses doesn’t go past that line. They’re good for driving and other activities that doesn’t require too much moving.
Most people like athletes, models and dancers that have the line of work that require moving a lot, might highly disagree. For one, they may say glasses may cause them headaches from constant pressure on the nose or behind the ear. Second, will get in the way and fall and break. Third, they like to wear sunglasses over the prescription contacts. Last, glasses may collect oil and bacteria from the skin.
These things may be true, but there are solutions to these problems. First of all, instead of those frames that give headaches, consider getting loose frames. Second, get frames with strings attached to prevent getting in the way and falling. Finally, as said before, glasses require little cleaning. So instead of getting contact lenses, get glasses and if needed then clean glasses, otherwise there is nothing wrong with wearing glasses and it’s fashionable.
