The debate team has competed and placed in three competitions this year.
On Sept. 17, the debate team competed at Brandeis. Six out of nine students got placed and got medals. The following week they went to O’Connor where ten students received medals, including Aldrian Johnson who got first place in Dramatic Interpretation.

“Being in debate is very overwhelming, but very fun,” Johnson said, who had the opportunity to go to state this past year. “Freshman year someone told me that they got a full ride scholarship from being in debate.”
At MacArthur five students received awards, including freshman Valeria Najera who got 5th place in Duet Acting with her partner freshman Jaden DeBravo.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Najera, who with her partner placed third at O’Connor, said. “It was surprising, and I was excited. So many emotions were going.”
There are various speaking events including extemporaneous speaking, dramatic interpretation and acting.
“It’s not just about arguing,” freshman Nama Khalif said, “it’s about having a voice, and helping with your life goals.”
