About 49 million Americans can’t afford to feed themselves. Almost 33 percent are children and about 10 percent are seniors. Around 37 million used one a food bank somewhere in 2010.
The San Antonio Food Bank desperately needs help with donations for these people in need of food. The most needed food items the Food Bank is looking for are: peanut butter, cereal, tuna, beans, rice, macaroni and cheese, chili, canned stews, canned soups, canned luncheon meats, full meals in a can or box, and “Pop Top” food items. The Food Bank asks that you do not donate homemade goods, rusty or unlabeled cans, alcoholic beverages, mixes or sodas, opened or used items, baby food in jars, any kind of drug, food close or after expiration date and no glass containers.
“I might want to donate or volunteer. The reason donations are so popular is because they take little time. Volunteering takes time out of people’s lives and whether or not it’s the right way to look at it, they don’t think it’s worth their time,” Matthew Billman, freshman, said.
