During the last two weeks, various students from all grade levels had a chance to connect with poets Sandra Cisneros and Carmen Tafolla.

On March 28, after being invited by RackSpace, the first group of about 17 students, received the chance to attend a luncheon, sponsored by Gemini Ink, to interact with author Sandra Cisneros at The McNay Museum.
There, Cisneros spoke about how she became a writer and gave students tips on how to better their writing.
Freshman Krystal Stigger was part of the group who received a chance to meet Cisneros.“It was pretty cool because I’ve never met an author, ” Stigger said. “She gave a lot of tips about how to improve your writing.”
A second, larger group of students were visited by former Poet Carmen Tafolla on April 5. The event came after Roosevelt was submitted in a contest and in the end was a lucky school to win the chance to have Tafolla speak here on campus.
Like Cisneros, Tafolla also spoke of how she began writing and gave students advice into how they could find their voice in their writing.
“I love listening to when authors in person talk about their works that we’ve taught in class,” English Dean Heather Farmer said. “It’s like a reality check for us teachers.”
