This past Monday was a day to pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.
The holiday not only celebrates the birthday of Dr. King, but the big change that he as many as other activists changed during The 1960s Civil Rights Movement.
MLK Day is always celebrated nationwide, but with a city as big as ours, San Antonians felt the spread of the day a little bigger.
It is estimated that around 300,000 people attended the local event.
With this amount of people, many, even from our own campus attended for different reasons.
Junior Shanoa Fowler was one who attended. She said she finds it very important to give always give back when one gives to her.
“I’m part of the African American community and I like to give to society. This is my first time volunteering at the march,” Fowler said. “It was a great experience and I got to meet a lot of new people.”
German Teacher Bettina Jones is another local that attended.
Jones said enjoyed the weather, and getting to walk around with new people and having political discussions with other attendants.
“It was so big that it was too difficult to spot out someone you might know,” Jones said.
Along with other members of our campus, all of San Antonio’s City Year’s members went on to also support the march.

John Segovia was one of these members.
“Really fun just participating. There was lots of activism and political posters at the march, though it was cold,” Segovia said.
