Sweet icing drips down the gingerbread confection. Lights are hung up outside the house to show holiday cheer. Warm clothes are given to those less fortunate. It’s the holiday season and the Design and Technology Academy (DATA) is getting into the holiday spirit with three community service projects the Saturday of Dec. 11th.
On Dec. 11, DATA held three community service projects, gingerbread canned food drive, dress the knights and putting up Christmas lights for the elderly in Windcrest.
“Everything this weekend went awesome. We collected 1,036 pounds of food for the food bank. That is more than any other food drive collection in the city. I’m very proud of everyone,” Stacia FitzSimon, DATA director, said.
Ten students went to visit the elderly residents in Windcrest and helped them to put up Christmas decorations as they are unable to do so for themselves. Their help was greatly appreciated by the neighborhood.
“Everyone was so grateful, it gave everyone that good feeling for making someone so happy,” Sandy Nagel, DATA secretary, said.
Dress the Knights is an ongoing event lasting until Dec. 17. This is a clothes drive, collecting new or gently used clothes for the less fortunate at Camelot Elementary School.
“We have had a lot of donations. It’s really great,” FitzSimon, said.
The last service project was the gingerbread collection drive. Students brought canned food to ‘buy’ supplies to build their gingerbread house to be judged in the contest. Their were about 40 students of teams of three or four. Many awards for given out and they collected over 1,000 pounds of food for the San Antonio Food Bank, more than any other collection in the city.
“We donated food so that the homeless and the less privileged could have a nice meal for the holidays,” Maddy Martinez, freshman, said.
A very successful weekend for everyone. To get involved with community service talk to your teachers to see if anything is happening so that you can make the difference.
